  • Rented a car through Hotwire and went over one day and was charged the maximum rate for the car . Renter beware Avis will penalize you if you go over the Hotwire contract . It states the overage rate in the upper right hand side of contract. I suggest extending the Hotwire contract one or two days just to be safe when renting through them . I don't know if other car rental agencies do this .

  • I would never rent a car from Avis. They do a soft credit hit if you pay with a debit card and if it is not high enough they decline your rental. I was told 137.00 would be put on hold and actually 299.00 was. Then we paid with out debit card on returning the card and they put 299.00 on hold on that card as well. We were also charged a extension fee when we made it in their 29 minute grace period that the guy at the counter said he waived when he did not. I feel like I was lied to from start to finsh. AVOID them!!!!!! Have had to make many phone calls with minimum hold times of 20 minutes.

  • we have been stuck in South Carolina for 20 hours "and 7 of that was on the side of the road" there roadside service is totally incompetent to handle anything. we payed a taxi service $100 to get to the closest hotel and we still have no car and they have no idea what they are going to do to help us.

  • I had invalid toll charges run through to my credit card for toll road useage in a different state from where I was with the rented car. Avis personnel refused to provide any assistance in resolving the problem. It was obvious to me that Avis had incorrectly associated a toll road transponder with the vehicle I rented. I have spent hours dealing with my credit card company and the toll road billing company (HTA LLC, in New York) with no resolution.

  • When I returned my car I was told there was a gasoline charge for driving it less 75 miles. They said I was told about this at the time of the rental--I was not.

I was told it would be waived if I could show a receipt for gas. I happened to have it although of course it could have been my wife's car, or anyone's car, for that matter. I was told that if I faxed in the receipt the charge would be cancelled. Of course it has not been. I just tried to send an email to customer service about this, but was not accepted because I did not enter some numbers with the right number of digits even though I did. And finally, of course, they are closed on Saturday.

  • I am going to file a complaint with the Jackson county District Attorney's office and contact the Medford Police Department.
Greg, the attendant at the Medford International Airport, was a real A**Hole from the beginning. He was indignant because I "didn't write down the ending miles on the odometer". And then he TOLD, not asked me, to go out and get the number for him, or he wouldn't be able to get me a receipt. He should have said, "I'm sorry the previous attendant didn't explain our precedure correctly when you picked up the car. Since I am the only person at the counter, would you do me a favor and run out and get those numbers for me? I realize it wasn't your fault, and it would really help me out!" Had he said this, I would have gladly done this for him. He behaved as if I worked for him instead of the other way around. On his way out, he asked me if I filled the tank. I replied that I did. He said, "Okay." and went outside. When he came back in, not only did he NOT give me my receipt for the car rental....which I didn't realize at the time because he printed out something and handed me a small white slip of paper....he DID charge me for $16.33 worth of gasoline even the gas tank was full! Good thing I save my receipts. I did pay the gas station cash, so from now on in order to have a backup, I'm going to pay with my credit card. I advise you to do the same thing. I contacted Hotwire and complained about my experience, and they have turned my complaint over to their headquarters and are going to investigate this disturbing matter. I hope they cease their business relationship with Avis...I do NOT want to the chance on ended up with them again the next time I use Hotwire for a car rental. AVIS HAS SO MANY COMPLAINTS AGAINST THEM....I'VE NOT SEEN ONE GOOD REPORT ON THEM. STAY AWAY FROM THEM!! I am expecting a return phone call from the Medford Police Department.

  • We rented a van from Avis at the Gulfport/Biloxi Airport for a family trip to Texas on 28 May 10. The ordeal was a nightmare from the get go. My son had originally been quoted 1400 miles, thank goodness we had proof, we added a day to the rental and they tried to take mileage away from us. They never told my son they would do a credit check once he got there, long story short I ended up putting it on my credit card. As we were leaving the van was making a horrible noise so my son turned it in and they gave him another set of keys to another van. We were told at the counter to bring the van back with the same amount of gas which was 1/2 a tank. When we returned the car they again tried to take away 400 of our guaranteed miles, again we had proof they gave it to us. When I checked my cedit card balance they had added almost 80.00 to what I had sined for. When I called they said it was because we did not fill the van up. I explained what had happened and that we left with half a tank. Chris Walker, the manager, stated their records showed it was a full tank. I asked to see the records showing a full record and he said to show me my records that I had a 1/2 tank. Very ugly conversation and I believe predjudice was involved because I am a white woman. My son called and the same person gave him the number to customer service. The person my son spoke with was getting the problem resolved and they got disconnected. My son had me call and the woman I spoke with did not really give a crap and said it was all my fault and deal with it, again I feel predjudice was involved because I am a white woman. My son called again and the problem was finally resolved. I as a white person spoke with two black agents and was treated horribly, my son who is half black, spoke with two white agents and both were very helpful. Horrible service and they should be ashamed for the double standards!

  • I recently was verbally abused by the Manager at Avis after I told him that I was going to file a formal complaint with Avis Headquarters regarding the customer service (or lack thereof) that I have received at Avis Reagan National Airport location.

I have been an Avis First Member for over 3 years which allows certain perks ... at the very least, being treated with respect! Well to make a long story short, I was on my cell phone speaking with a representative at headquarters obtaining instructions for filing a formal complaint against the Reagan National Airport Branch when the Manager became visibly LIVID. After telling me that I had "never made a reservation" and that is was my fault that I did not make one (even though I produced the confirmation number) he finally got me into a car. The Manager then left the desk, went out of the side entrance to what I thought was to give me the registation document, and proceeded to "rip me a new one" where no one else could hear; verbally abusing me. The Manager was so angry that immediately removed myself from the situation, got into the car and immediately called back to headquarters to explain what had just transpired and asking the representative if I should contact the police. The representative placed me on hold and contacted the Manager to find out what was going on. She then advised me that I would be well within my rights to contact the police in addition to filing the formal complaint that we had discussed moments earlier. I decided to just leave the premises and file the formal complaint.

Two weeks had passed and I received a letter from Avis stating that and investigation had been conducted and based on what the Manager had stated, I was no longer eligible to rent a car from Avis or Budget". In other words, we have spoken to one of our employees (Manager) and because we all work for the same company, we believe everything that he has told us. The District Manager never contacted me to ask what happened, offer an apology, NOTHING! The Manager took every step he felt necessary (to include lying) and told the District Manager that I verbally abused him; I now know that this was his reason for leaving the front desk to curse me out where no one else could hear.

Once I received the letter for my denial of car rental service with Avis, I contacted the District Manager, and she basically confirmed that the Manager's actions was the "norm" at Avis because she too began speaking to me in a very rude manner. I began to demonstrate to her (since it has become evident that neither she nor the Managers have been trained in treating people with respect) how one should be spoken to by remaining calm and telling her that "I can rent a car from anywhere, it's the PRINCIPAL of this whole ordeal that she and her employees are not understanding). That conversation just fell on deaf ears because she kept saying what the Manager had told her. (?!?!)

In short, I have chosen to take my business elsewhere, I thought about filing charges against the Avis Manager for verbal assault, but I am a very busy lady. I was an Avis First Member because I would rent from Avis on average of 3 times per month. I will now give my hard earned money to another rental car company that values my business and me as a person. What ever happened to the days when customer service really meant something????

  • My experience with Avis is HORRID.
    Please here me out.
After using Price Line to do my 2 1/2 day contract for a car rental in MPLS (at a price of $105.00), I was given Avis as my car rental company. Everything went fine and I gassed up the vehicle before I dropped it off at the airport as I said I would. With no atttendant on duty at 6am, I filled out my contract and dropped off my keys at the Avis after hours desk.
--Seems pretty normal for anyone renting a car....right?
Two weeks later I notice a $513.22 bill on my credit card from Avis....
Wow! What is this, did someone run into the vehicle after it was parked..or what???
Called customer service to find out that they said I did not have a contract on the rental..Told them that I did..and after doing some investegating they said that they did receive a payment from PRICE LINE, but it was not enough and that I had to make up the difference or take it up with PRICE LINE. They also informed me that I was being charged for bringing back the car on an empty tank.....I could not believe it!
After talking to a supervisor, they aknowledged that this was their mistake and would reimburse me the $513.22...........
After five phone calls, a lot of apologies, and admitting their mistake, I have only received $386.16 of the $513.22 after a month!!!I have now brought it up with my credit card company W-lls F-rgo and they said that they would be more than happy to take care of the situation and reimburse me the remainder until they collect from this unethical company--AVIS--

  • In Geneva Switzerland the sign behind the agents says "Preferred members get their keys in 5 minutes or you get 30 euro back"

I got in the preferred line (of which I am a member) and got yelled at "OTHER LINE!" What? I proceeded to wait 10 minutes to be abused by more agents just to pick up my car. They will not refund the 30 euro. It is a complete lie. Even my credit card company will barely help.

  • Avis has the absolute worst Customer Service Department of any rental car agency. They are simply horrendous.

    constantbusinesstraveler 11/13/09 3:11PM

  • Avis Customers -

I rented a car at $48 per day. When I returned it a day late, I got charged $155 for the extra day plus a $10 late fee. The late fee I agree with, the $155 is unconscionable.

As of this point (9 days) - they have not called back to address my complaint. I won't rent again from Avis unless they address this - You might as well rent from the less expensive places.
