  • Beware of this company. They don't send out paper statement and their online system is a very hard to use. My problem is similar to that of dhagen. They sold part of my loans to the Education Department, which appeared in a different place than the normal Sallie Mae account. So when I paid off one account, the other account was hidden, which resulted in a fat late fee (or interest), as they called it. I had never known about the selloff of my loan to the Department of Education because nobody notified me, nor did I receive the very first statement which stated the due day. Ironically, I got a paper statement only after one month after the due day of the first payment, and they charged me more than 100 dollars on a principle of less than $10K. When I called them, the supervisor said that sorry, they are not responsible for the notification system. (All they care is sucking away your hard-earned money). I opted to pay the extra interest to end any business dealing with Sallie May. They designed all those complicated online notification system on purpose to trick people. Beaware. Never deal with this company again or you will be very sorry.

  • My husband and I are refinancing our mortgage, and the underwriter needs to know what the monthly payment will be for the (deferred) loan my husband co-signed for our son. My husband has been on the phone for 1 to 2 hours every few days for a month- just to have Sallie Mae E-mail, or regular mail what the monthly payment will be. Every time my husband calls, we get a different answer why we aren't getting any help. A (out-sourced) supervisor told my husband that they only deal with 40 percent of the requests they get. Great! We NOT be using Sallie Mae for our daughters' loans. In fact, we recieved the information we needed from AES weeks ago.

  • SALLIE MAE IS THE WORST STUDENT LOAN COMPANY EVER!!!

    Their customer service is HORRIBLE!

    1. They do not speak ENGLISH!
    2. They do not know anything about your account!
    3. They call you 5 million times, and when u call them back, they had no reason to call you in the first place!
    4. When you have a cosigner, its a HASSLE to get anything done!
    5. This company does not know what they are doing!

If it wasn't for the short amount of time I have to get a loan, I would NEVER EVER NEVER EVER get a loan from them!

I had such a stressful week because of this stupid idiotic company. I will NEVER apply for SallieMae AGAIN!

  • You people are unbelievable. I have been paying my loan each month, only to be told my payments have not been received for 2 months.
Obviously paying by check with the invoice is not traceable. After sending copies of the cancelled checks I still can not get an answer. No one speaks English, when asked to speak to a manager they transfer you to a dead zone and disconnect you!

  • They particpate in deceptive billing notification practices. I can not believe that the Department of Education is using our tax dollars to a company with such terrible service. I have a one loans with sallymea and one loan with the department of education serviced by salliemea. When I go to the salliemea website to pay my bill online with the link they provide it only post payments to the sallie may account and not the the salliemae departement of education loan. This action results in Sallemae charging me more interest and late fees on the department of education loan. When discussed with the supervisor Bryant Lawlor it didn't matter that half the payments should have gone to the other loan.

  • I am extremely frustrated with and disappointed in Sallie Mae. I recently received notifcation, that my loan was 60 days delinquent and that I had not made my last several payments. This was untrue as my payments are made by direct withdrawal. Proof of these transactions was faxed to the individuals at the call center but the collection calls continued (several a day). I have made multiple calls to Sallie Mae's call center, which were met with nothing more than demands for payment and offers of a Forebearance(which I obviously refused since I faxed them proof of payment). Each time, I asked to speak to a supervisor and was told that none were available. They have been extremely unhelpful in a situation that should have been easily resolvable. I am not usually one to complain publically but this is ridiculous. Beware of Sallie Mae!

    indygores 8/18/10 5:05PM

  • Wow...youd think by now they would have this issue resolved if people were still complaining about it. Ive been paying sallie mae for 3 years. every year, i get my new payment booklet and havnt missed a payment at all. They now claim that I signed up for payment by email?? what does that even mean? I never signed up for such a program and didnt receive email notification. They told me it happend in feb. 2010 ....ive never paid anything with them online. I normally get the new booklet every august but it didnt come this time. So I call to make a payment and tell them they didnt send my booklet. They proceded to charge me $15 for paying over the phone so that my payment would be on time. They wont waive the "convenience fee" for paying over the phone because "i got a notification thru email" to pay bills online. Is there not a better way to take care of your customers?

  • i have been "dealing" with this company for about 5 years now and it has not been fun to say the least. please note most of the "positive" comments are anonymous i don't find that surprising. I was told at 18 years old that i had a "great lifetime" opportunity to sign for a $50,000 loan with no co-signer. being young and not fully educated to signed it. PLEASE DO NOT SIGN A LOAN WITH THEM! While i was in school everything was fine once i graduated the head aches started. They wanted me to pay $600 for one loan $100 for another and $150 for another. Right! Most 19-20 year old make over $1000 a month. So i tried to get a deferment that way i would not gain interest while i couldn't pay. they wouldn't let me they said all i could do is pay $150 for a forbearance. So i used up all my forbearance time and am still pay out my *** for it. I have to live with my mom because i can not afford my own place. they legally take 75% of my monthly income and i'm just s.o.l i don't understand why this is legal and why no one can seem to do anything about it. I have so many more complaints with the people its not even funny. like one time i sent them all the money i owed and instead of distibuting it the way it was suposed to be they paid one loan 8 months in advance and let another one go without any payment on it at all! when i called the lady was talking me in circles so i put her on speaker phone so my mom could help me understand it and she said if i didn't take her off the phone she would disconnect the call because guess what she could make sense of what she was telling me and was actually helping me get somewhere with that call. If anyone ever files a class action lawsuit against them plz let my know i truely feel i could help with it my e-mail address is lost nthought27@yahoo.com

  • I have been very unsatisfied with Sallie Mae Customer Service. It started in Feb. I started getting Sallie Mae bills in Dec. of 09. In feb I got a bill with late fees. I never received a bill for Jan. I called Sallie Mae and after that I stopped receiving bills. I called in May and found out somehow I was signed up for online bill pay. I didn't do it. told them to cancel the online bill pay and I wanted to receive statements in the mail. I haven't received a statement yet. called last week and they said they would send me my bill and haven't I just want to pay my bills, does Sallie Mae not want my money? Ha, that's a good one. This company is horrible.

  • There is a hidden charge of 3% for credit card use. I agreed to an eight month intrest free payment plan for $35,000 at eight payments of $4,375. I was told that there would be a $55 one time charge to enter the agreement. On the first installment I was charged a $131.25 convenience charge for using a credit card. When I called for an explanation I was told that there could be nothing done for that charge and that I could avoid future monthly charges by switching to payment by check.

WRITE YOUR SENATORS AND CONGRESSMEN Right now there are two bills being debated,
    • one in the Senate (S-3219)
    • one in the House (HR 5043).
Based on my research SLM has always been protected by the gov and it is useless to try to fight them. If you can, cut your losses and payoff/refinance if you can. Good luck trying to get a payoff balance, I'm still trying.

  • Sallie Mae is the most frustrating company I have dealt with to date. They send SO MUCH MAIL it's hard to tell what's junk and what's important. My first payment was due in the amount of about $22. I logged in about two weeks after the payment was due and I sent them about $44 to cover next month. So, I get a call that I owe more money and I had just lost my job. So, after talking with the person they said if I made a payment of at least $43.80 by the 7th, I would not have any late reports. I made the payment of $43.80 on the 7th and another payment of $43.80 on the 25th for the next month. I got another call and they are now saying I'm 67 days past-due. So I call them ask about it and they're telling me amounts I should have paid that I was never informed of. I didn't show it on their website and it didn't show it on any of the statements I've received. Piss poor company.

  • While most companies have goals like "improve customer service," Sallie Mae's goal must be to make serving their customers as frustrating and impossible as is possible. I am currently working an barely-paid internship, so I applied for a Economic Hardship Deferment. Having never recieved the paperwork the website said might come if they needed further documentation, I assumed the deferment had gone through. Especially since the emails about my "account information" no longer lead me to the part where I could actually open my account information. Alas, it did not go through, now I am deliquent and no matter how much time I spend on the phone, I cannot find an actual person to talk to to try to solve this problem. Clearly, if I was not required by law to deal with this company, I wouldn't.

  • I have just spent over an hour trying to get the phone number for this companies CEO. He/she is well protected, because none of the employees know who they are or will not give his/her name or office number. I have talked to people form the US and overseas where they out sourced jobs that could be used by Americans. Shame on you. Not only will I never use this company again but will never, never, never recomend it to anyone.

  • I would never ever recommend Sallie Mae as a lending company for any student. I did not like the service. Trying to get through was very hard and then the people you get transferred over to don't speak a bit of good ENGLISH LANGUAGE. I could not understand anything these people were saying and the service was terrible. I think if I borrow money I should be able to speak to an American that speaks proper ENGLISH. Never again will I or my children borrow from Sallie Mae again. Terrible service and your calls are sent over to INDIA when they should be directed here in the USA.

  • I directed that the additional $100 I included with my payment be applied to the largest loan outstanding. Instead, they applied the entire amount to the loan and zero to the other loans. Now, I'm past due! This is not the first time that something like this has happened. I find their CSRs incompetent and the supervisors must have gotten their training from a loan shark. Unbelievably rude. I am going to refinance these loans with someone else and be rid of them. Simply the worst.

How can they classify my account as delinquent when I am a year ahead on payments?

  • We have called Sallie Mae 5 times during 04/28/2010 and each time we were being transfered, helped by the correct person, the line either went dead, busy signal or just nothing happened. This can get very frustrating, espcially when we have jobs to be at, and time frames also. You need to provide enough customer services reps in order to provide the services we need during our scheduals also, not some automated answering system which gets us nowhere. Now, we had a real person helping us and just got cut off. !!! Are we agitated? YOU BET

    Cheryl 4/27/10 11:30AM

  • Representatives through Sallie Mae do not seem to have answers to any questions, nor are they able to transfer you to a supervisor or someone who can help you more efficiently. Called multiple times to speak with someone regarding my account and was put on hold multiple times, hung-up on, or transferred back to the automated system!

  • It has been over a week and the 1098-E interest tax form I was told, via telephone customer service, would be mailed to me when I called on 3.29.2010, has yet to arrive.

It was beyond maddening to have to call them but I could not print out the tax form at salliemae.com as I was informed that "your account was closed" due to the fact that I paid off my loan in November 2009.

After 20 minutes in a queue routed to India, I was informed that it will take 7 - 10 business days to receive the 1098-E loan interest statement.

NOTE TO FUTURE LOAN PAY-OFF BORROWERS: You will be penalized and unable to access your own tax interest statement online once you pay off your loan. Bear that in mind, if only so you know that Sallie Mae will not (or did not, in my case) proactively send out a hard copy to report on taxes for your loan year.

While customer service reps ARE permitted to tell you, verbally, the amount to write in on your 2009 taxes, again, they cannot email or fax you. So you have to take their word for it that the figure given verbally is true and correct.

I hope they are taking notes on how to improve their reputation via this message board. A.) No overflow calls to India; B.) Send out tax documents to ALL customers who have paid off their loans; or C.) Keep their online accounts open through tax season.

  • Sallie Mae continues to have me verify my accounts every year before they will issue my 1098-E. Of course I graduated in 2002 and nothing has changes. It's now April 4 and I still do not have my forms to do my taxes. I have verified my loans TWICE this year alone. I would recommend ANY other lender if at all possible. I am seriously considering reporting hem to the IRS.

  • I have been getting three computerized calls a week, mostly partly cut off and not getting enough time to write down a phone number. Finally a real human being called us and we got the matter of my son's student loan cleared up; Sallie Mae is just waiting for documentation. But I keep getting these computerized calls, so I called the CSR to ask them to stop the calls since we were getting the misunderstanding cleared up. She refused, insisted that, because we were "delinquent" Sallie Mae had the right to keep calling even tho, to me, it had become harrassment. I literally begged her to please do something to stop these computer calls, but she refused. She kept telling me my son was delinquent on his loan even though he's a full time student at Ohio State and she acknowledged Sallie Mae is have trouble interfacing with OSU's new system. Finally SHE said, I'm going to hang up now because YOU'RE not listening. What? SHE wasn't listening to me.I have never been so upset by a CSR in my entire life as I have with her. I lost it. As she hung up, I said "well scr** you too." I am a very civil and polite person. It takes a lot to make me lose my temper. But her stonewalling, holier than thou attitude and accusatory tone succeeded where others have failed. I hope the call WAS recorded for quality control purposes. I'm really really upset.

    Anonymous 4/2/10 9:28AM

  • Between Kate, Mark, and Alice, I was not able to get my year 2009 interest tax form 1098-E e-mailed or faxed to me today.

I was informed that, BECAUSE I paid off my loan in November of 2009 (after thirteen years) they closed my account. Therefore I am unable to access or print out the form on my own at salliemae.com with my USER ID and password.

I find it impossible to understand that there is no one at Sallie Mae who can email or fax me the form I was able to print out on my own all these years.

"I am sorry we cannot email you this form. We do, however, have the ability to send it through the mail with the address we have for you on file."

"While we know the 2009 interest figure of $39.33, which we can tell you over the phone, we cannot email it or fax it because the account has been closed."

Do I need to highlight that I was the one who had to be proactive and ask for this piece of information? It is March 29th, and taxes are due by April 15th, but did anyone at Sallie Mae proactively mail out a form to me before I called them today?

That right there was a rhetorical question.

Sallie Mae is, by far, the most backwards company. Did they not stop to think that their former customers, ones who'd paid off their loans, would STILL NEED ACCESS TO THEIR 1098-E interest form available to them via their online account?

Tell me if that makes any sense at all.

    Again, rhetorical.

Changes need to be made with regard to this issue. Think, Sallie Mae! You're supplying loans for education but perhaps you should start in-house.

  • Excellent trick for talking to humans, this saved me alot of time. Unfortunately, Sallie Mae is still as ignorant as ever. I lost my job in November of last year and am behind on payments. After speaking with 7 different people, I found a loan department supervisor who was willing to settle my account for a one-time payment that day. I GOT DISCONNECTED IN THE MIDDLE OF NEGOTIATION. When I called back it was "impossible" to be transferred back to that same supervisor. I spoke with another supervisor and I finally offered a settlement of 85% of the total outstanding loan balance. "There's absolutely no way we can do that." Lets see here... what's better? 85% of what I owe UP FRONT TODAY, or I use that money to pay other bills and I default on the Sallie Mae student loan and they collect a mear miniscule fraction of that owed money. No wonder Sallie Mae (US government) is in the crapper...Thanks for all your help Albert, Nora, Dexter, Max, Dennis, Michael, and Martin! Funny how those names don't sound quite as middle-eastern as their respective owners did...

There's no answer on the VERY LONG PHONE TREE. So I email them again, and tell them I need an ACTUAL PERSON to talk to. They give me the same number. • Sallie Mae took payments out of my savings account twice after I cancelled the auto debit. They didn't take the payment amount $120.00, they took $488.82 each time. I started the auto debit and then sent in paperwork to lower my payment so called 2 days after I agreed to the auto debit and cancelled it. 2 months later January 2010 they auto debited my savings account $488.82, I called immediately and cancelled it again, a second time. February 12, 2010 they auto debited my savings account again, I call and demand cancellation and the money to be returned this time. LOL. The first time they illegally took money from my account the customer service rep agreed that it had been cancelled, we agreed on the date that it had been cancelled but "sorry we can't fix that glitch". The second time I am told to fax them my bank statement showing the NSF (insufficient funds) charge and they would put the money back including the fee within 7-10 days. LOL. Today is the 25th and still no return of the money. I call and I am lied to repeatedly, "didn't receive the fax" but then the supervisor reads the fax that to me, then I am told that they would return my $25 but not the payment that they removed, Illegally. And the supervisor hung up on me.
Do not use Sallie Mae, work part time, beg borrow from family, these people are crooks and liars.

I went there to make my payment and get my 1098 but even after I did I couldn't look at my 1098 letter online. I called Customer Service except it wasn't, it was their delinquency line. The rep said she couldn't tell me anything because "I was in delinquency status." She couldn't e-mail me anything, she didn't have access to email. She couldn't tell me why I couldn't get my form that would be Tech Service. Except she couldn't transfer me to Tech Service because..."I was in delinquency status." I asked her whether she could see that I had just made a payment and she said "Yes" but she couldn't do anything else because...you guess it. She must have said that over five times(I KNOW I'M DELINQUENT U STUPID COW, that's why I need my 1098.) wanted to reach through the phone and slap her. I have two years after this and next semester, I think I'll become a hooker rather than deal with them.

  • It has taken six months for me to finally get my account brought not only to current but all false reports removed. They used terms to try and force me to aquiesce to their rude statements and make me stop calling. I did not. Get Ombudsman involved, they are in every state waiting to get your problems resolved for good. Get the senator of your state involved. They have no excuse to ignore this shark anymore. Once Sallie Mae knows we're turning important heads towards them they will fear US and not the other way around.

If they are messing up your information get tenacious. Grab a hold of someone you can rely on and keep calling them every week. Keep at them and they will fix it,as they will eventually get tired of hearing you call. They might even hang up on you...just call right back. They deal with the futures and funds of students, and should act accordingly.

I suppose the issue is the loophole that allows them to raise the interest rates without being FORCED to keep them at a lower,non-usury rate(aka less then 1% or none at all). This is a very unusual situation, and if the students cry out loud enough and long enough to the right faces things will change.

This page has helped me get to a person 15-30 minutes faster then using the SM phone tree of doom!

  • They are horrible. Just horrible. Their "Manage Your Loans" online center is useless and every time I call up them I get someone who speaks broken English. I'm getting very inaccurate statements in the mail from them that don't match up with what they're telling me online and I doubt that's accurate. I just saw online that said I was past due on an account for over 40 days. The statement I received in the mail just a few days before said I was current and owed no past due amount. I can't afford to be making about ten payments per month. The U.S. Attorney General and the Consumer Protection Agency needs to step in!

I have called 3 times in the last week and have been assured that the problem has been addressed. This has been a recurring problem over the last 6 months. each time I call I am told that the problem has been addressed. We continue to get calls reference a delinquent account. Each time I am called I have to go through the same procedure, however the problem is not handled. I am frustrated because Sallie Mae states my account is past due. • I have constant issues with Sallie Mae. It is very difficult to get a hold of a human to help you and give you information. Average wait times are about an hour. You have to leave a call back number. So if I try to call during my lunch break and resolve some issues, then I'm not able to handle it once they get around to returning my call.

Also, I have never been able to open my account statements through Adobe.
AND the login section is screwy for lack of a better term. It is difficult to retrieve user name/ password info and also difficult to change them if needed.

I actually missed the call (couldn't get to the phone quick enough) but within two minutes they called again. I was put through to a rep and my question was answered. The rep's English was fairly good. A little hard to understand. I agreed to do the survey but he hung up on me instead of transferring me.

  • Awful. My name and my co-signer's name got reversed. For 2 years I have been trying to get it fixed because I can't consolidate my loans with this error. They transfer me to several departments and usually I get disconnected. Good luck.

  • Sallie Mae is the worst - ever!

They charged me twice in one month 'by mistake.' After the first time I called about receiving a refund they were apologetic and told me a refund check would be shppied overnight.

10 days later and 16 phone calls - NO CHECK!

Every time I call I am transferred until I reach a disconnecting line. I am making my payments on time so I expect better service from this company.

  • Horrible customer service. Takes FOREVER to reach a person, and then the call center is outsourced overseas (Philippines?) and they can't actually do anything to correct a problem. I keep getting letters/email requesting changes to load docs, yet when I call the customer service number they say all is good and the letters should stop. Then why do I get another letter the next week. I hate them.

  • calling sallie mae is the biggest headache ever- my mom pays all the bills, but my dad's name is on the account so they won't give her any answers when she calls! I understand that they are protecting our privacy but their has to be some way for my mom to be able to get her name on the account right?

  • I'm sure the folks in India are very nice, but there sure seems to be a communications issue when we're talking about my loan account. I am beyond frustrated with trying to rephrase each question four and five times until the person on the other side of the world actually understands what I am asking...and when I request a supervisor, I'm transferred to the call center in...TEXAS? Why couldn't I just talk to them in the first place?!?

  • My support rep was helpful and they did call me back within 7 minutes. The voice communication system was delayed several seconds because I was talking to a rep in another continent which made the conversation somewhat difficult. His english was very good,it was just the delay.

  • On Friday the 26th of June I called with a question. 1) I liked the unusual choice of being able to be called back when it is a busy call center time. 2) My rep was very kind and knowledgeable and answered me very well. Unfortunately I did not have the time to answer a survey about his service. I hope this will help.
