I am a cashier at K-mart. I feel like I do my job really well. I'm always trying to please the customer, and check them out as quickly as I can. Customers get upset about asking for Rewards Cards and all of the questions the cashier asks. CORPORATE puts questions on the pinpad...not us. I know it is super frustrating and annoying...some people end up swiping their card three or four times because of the survey and then the e-mail question. Believe me, the cashiers don't want those questions on there either! It is hard to deal with a line of 10 people when every single one has to answer 20 questions. K-Mart could be a successful business if they weren't driving their customers (and employees) away like this. One thing customers do not understand though is that we are PRESSURED by our managers to get those dang rewards cards. We hate it as much as the customer does. But when our jobs are being threatened by our rewards card/smart plan numbers...what do you want us to do?

As a soon to be exemployee of Kmart I have to say their pay compensation is not fair.If you get hired to work in the electronics department you will make more an hour than some employees that have been there for a year or more(but wasn't hired for electronics). They don't work any harder than any other employee in the store.Plus Kmart doesn't give raises every year.Alot of people depend on this.Their health insurance goes up but not their pay so they end up bringing home less.Kmart should take a long hard look at this if they want to keep their employees.

I have worked for Kmart for 3+ years. When I first started working there I LOVED going to work. Now I HATE it. Things ran smooth, jobs got done, morale was high, etc but now everyone I know hates it. They cut our hours but expect us to do the same amount of work plus some ( IE: tons of layouts, checking out customers, rearrange endcaps or layouts that you've already done 3x because the DM doesn't like it that way so they make you change it AGAIN, etc...). I love my job but the corporate people just don't get it. It's us "pee-on's" that make the money they get paid. They don't have a clue as to what we do on a daily basis. And don't EVEN get me started on the rewards card. Yes I have one and I agree it is a GREAT program. My thing is why keep bugging people about it? Kroger doesn't harass you about their card when you go there neither does Food lion, PetCo, CVS, or whoeever has a stupid card. I know our managers are getting rode hard about the numbers or whatever but with all the stipulations they put on who can sign up is ridiculous. My town isn't small but it consists of a lot of older folks that don't own a computer or a cell phone much less even know how to operate one. It's not fair that they can't have a card because they don't have an email or a cell phone. I don't blame our managers but I DO blame the higher ups that just don't get it. They don't see what we see daily. I wish they would just open their eyes and see that we have GREAT people working in this company that would be willing to go above and beyond for them if they would just do the right things and treat us right. I wanted to stay with the company and try to move up out of the store and into a corporate position but now I just don't see it anymore. I don't see the opportunities like there used to be.

i work at kmart and i hate it. out of all the crappy jobs i've held over the years, this one takes the cake. the supervisors and leads are lazy, and they worry too much about what everyone else is doing to focus on their own tasks. it's like they're on some power trip. they don't know how to do a proper schedule (such as i'll close one night and have to unload truck the next morning, so i'll only get like 3 hours of sleep) and the morning leads always show up late, leaving the employees assigned with unloading the truck hanging around outside the store until the lead or manager decides to show up (usually still smelling like booze from the night before.) oh yeah, and kmart (at least the one i work at) is extremely racist. one night i was working and an african-american family came in to shop. they were your typical family: mother, father, two kids, just laughing and having a grand night on the town. when they were far enough away where they couldn't hear us, the night manager told me to keep an eye on them. i asked why and she told me that she had the suspicion that they were attempting to shoplift. i asked what gave her that impression and she stood mute. i have been looking for another job for a few months now but, like the rest of this country, the chances of finding a job are few and far between. i find myself fortunate to have a job, i just wish it wasn't at a store that treats their employees and customers (specifically ones that aren't white) like crap.

Kmart treats their employees and customers horribly. The 72nd Street KMart in Tacoma, WA yells at their night crew for things that aren't even their fault, or when we have a valid excuse (like helping a customer). Furthermore, neither the day nor night crew are suppose to be helping customers. Sure if they ask were something is we can tell them what department it is and then point to the direction, maybe give vague direction but we're not aloud to stop what we are doing (even if it's nothing of importance) to direct them to the correct department and assist in locating the product they desire. I don't listen to this "policy" however, since I was train previously to help customers at a better store.

The worse of them though is the general manager who apparently treats anyone who's physical appearance he doesn't like badly and has yelled at employees so harshly that have actually gone to the hospital. This isn't surprising, because he had supposedly been involved in a criminal case involving another KMart where he was the district manager which lead to his termination as the district manager. He also treats contract workers badly, our night time cleaning crew aren't employees of KMart but rather employees of another company contracted to clean the store at night. The general manager seems to insist on telling them how to do their job and spots they missed. The contract workers actually try to finish as quickly as possible just so they can avoid him.

The night shift supervisor isn't much better. She has actually yelled at customers because they spend too much time in the store (this was when we were doing the 24 Hour test) and messing up the straightening. She also yells at employees when we take too long straightening (according to her) or don't finish task in an unreasonable amount of time, like say two pallets stacked four feet high and two full shopping carts of repacks each containing product spread throughout the store's hardlines within four hours with a required 15 min break and her harking periodically. She's treats men more harshly and has even sent employees to the emergency room. She talks too much explaining and reexplaining a task you already know how to do. She also will tell people who she thinks are worthless employees and even yaks off at the costumers who really just want to do their shopping.

Human Resources is bad. During my interview with her she didn't once look at my eyes. She doesn't do anything on the floor. She's anti-social. AND SHE BREAKS CONFIDENTIALITY. For example one employee found out about another employee's pay and complained about it to the HR. The HR told the first employee (the one who has the better pay) about the complaint.

recently I was let go for money loss from the store and the LP agents tried to make it out for me to be a thief!!! I am not and NOR have I ever been a thief and would never steal from a store that pays little for over worked hours. During the holiday season they had more than their share of break violations and if you weren't related to management or brown nosing you were casted out to be someone who wanted to take. I worked hard their with no respect from the top people and their always scheldule me during the days i had ALREADY let them know i couldnt work. There was no such thing as part time at kmart. It was either do what they said as far as their way and NOT the company way or you would be fired or even worse investigated. I dont appreciate Kmart for trying to sabatoge my good name and make me out to be someone Im not. They need to look at the ones that are running the store than people that are really trying to do their jobs.

Oh and the reason the lines are so long is because they cannot afford to put more than one or two cashiers up there. So we hurry as fast as we can while the bossed sit in the back in air-conditioned offices. So before biting the head off of a cashier, please stop and think.

Posted by pumpkin3

Everyone bashing the cashiers, you have no idea what we go through. Thankfully I am gone from Kmart but we have nothing to do with pricing and long lines. They never had the right price in the computer, we spent more time on the phone the at the register. When we shut off a light, it is for a mere 15 minute break or to go home. Which means turning in money and rushing to punch out so you don't get yelled at for staying over. You have no idea how badly I was treated. I could go on forever.

I have worked in retail for Wal-Mart and now work at a K-mart store. I just wanted to let a few people on here know why certain things happen there, and why we cannot do everything that you think should be done.

It seems our company wants the big money makers to keep making the same amount, so we get cut.Which is funny, because there are less people in the store doing more things then they were last month , with less hours to do them in.This is why we always ask about the rewards cards, which I personally have stopped doing, its rediculous.Security is laughable as they want us to do more and more of their job, and always show up to tell you to do more and more of there job but never seem to catch anyone stealing.
But, I have to say, that is no different then Wal-Mart.Or any retail. Its all the same, and rather funny because when I worked at Wal-Mart people would say "I'll just go to target" and if you work at target or K-mart, people will say" I'll just go to Wal-Mart", its a cycle really. Why does K-mart get the bad end, nobody ever threatening to go there? At least in this area, management has been a joke and caused the stores to shut down completely.K-mart, screen these people a little bit more, a lot of them are just annoying old men who have no idea how to handle freight or who is and isn't doing the work and this causes a huge breakdown.

The other problem, again with ALL retail, is the younger workers suck.Lazy, smart phone addicted idiots. No matter where I shop I see texting(could be facebook, who knows or cares) and its a 50/50 if I get a smile while checking out, which is a minimal in human interaction. Many quit after a week, if they even get that far, so anyone new to the job simply CANNOT answer a question quickly. I'd say out of every six months we pick up 1 good associate who will stay and make the store more manageable, and have about twenty fired or quit.If you don't beleive me, I actually had a list on my counter at Wal-Mart of names from people who had come and gone while I was there After the second year, it took up too much room at the register area.

Customers, I love helping you, I do,you break up the standard work day and make it go by faster. But there are some people who will say to us that "such and such was on sale last week and now the price is higher, we can't do that, its false advertising....".Or, this box has a rip I want it for forty percent off.The merchandise and pricing in both cases are fine, but I know this will never stop.

And no we cannot sell floor displays. When the item is clearanced we sell it then, and you probably don't want it anyway, a lot of them get abused while on display.Even if its a seasonal item, its a problem with district managers walking in on a store that hasn't met the full display criteria, now we are getting more bs from above.

I read a comment on here, about the movie street date and how we have to sell it because it was displayed. It really is a pain because one of our workers did make the mistake of putting that title out before he/she should have. But the company will get fined a LOT of money for that one title, theres laws about it, and even if we could just make a generic code to ring it up we just messed up the inventory, and thanks to the above mentioned weekly employees, thats already a tragedy for another days rant.Sorry for the inconvienance Wayne.

I hope that helps give some insight to you all, have a good day.

I am a customer service front lead. I am over worked and underpaid just like many Americans today. The bottom-line has been thrown in our and my fellow employees lap. Their newest brain child is the Shop Your way Rewards Card.A great concept and I use it regularly. My beef is this. Kmart has slowly sunk in to a Company that over works and under appreciates its employees. Benefits are which were once really good are now minimal at best. What once was a by department job has been turned into a less people and one person covering several areas, while they acknowledge customers-do freight-run to the registrar-make their breaks and lunches on time. Our checkout operators have been held hostages by the companies big wigs brain child- we all are suppose to get so many customers a day to sign up for these rewards cards. And if we don't we are being told we are in danger of consequences concerning our jobs. Oh and we are also on the line to make sure all our customers are signing up for a sears credit card as well. Not to mention you better have smart plans at a high percentage as well. Kmart has taken the want to go to work to day feeling out of their job. There is no more pride in a job well done because they don't recognize it. Times are hard so you stay working cause we need our jobs. But I gotta say-This company will fail eventually cause they are not good to their employees and they are the cogs in the wheel!!!!

I work the service desk at Kmart, and man do we get little respect for the little pay. Not from just the rude customers who blame the cashiers and S/D associates if something doesnt go thier way, but also we have the managers yelling at us constantly. My biggest complaint would have to be to the "brilliant" people who sit in the corporate office and keep pushing more and more stuff for us to do on a dailey basis.I am not even talking about the ridiculous Pebbles ,facebook etc that everyone has to do, or all the computer training that is mandatory but no hours to do them. No, My biggest compliant right now would have to be the Shop Your Way Rewards card. (Don't get me wrong its a great program) but its been out for over a year now, if they dont have a card by now, it is most likely by CHOICE! It is ridiculous for us to have to hound customers to enroll... why do we hound? Because our boss is getting yelled at by thier boss, whose getting yelled at by their boss etc to get SYWR's.
I personally at the store answer up to 4 phone lines, two walkie talkies, two instore phones lines, deal with pissed off customers trying to return merchandise without a reciept, lazy customers that cant walk another 5 feet to the checkouts, handle 2 registers of my own, all the change for every register in the store, watch over all cashiers, override them, answer questions, make sure there are plenty of shopping carts in the store and not a single one in the parking lot and thats not even all. Now to top it off, Every half hour IF I can get away from the S/D I have to round up numbers for SYWR????? Seriously this is to the person sitting in the corporate office thats saying lets have our stores do this and this ..... BACK OFF! We have enough going on without you adding to it!Just let us do our jobs in peace!!!!

I work for kmart and it's ran by a bunch of hoots!! the managements all rigged up to hook certain people they are friends with the good jobs and treat their employees like crap!!!!!!!!!! I HATE the management there they are all low life pieces of crap!!!!!

Posted by angryemployee

I am a current employee at K-Mart, and must say this has been one of the worst job experiences of my life.

90% of management is irredeemably homophobic and narrow-minded (I have personally borne witness to several of the higher-ups refer to homosexual men as "f*ggots", yet the sexist pigs that manage there have no qualms with the lesbian workers) As a gay male, I find this type of primitive thinking grossly offensive.

You can't express your opinions or disagree with ANY of the managers, or else your hours get drastically cut (reasons being low productivity).

If you don't understand something they try to tell you, then you are treated as though you were mentally handicapped (never mind that none of these blue collar slobs have the faintest idea how to verbally express themselves so its no wonder not everyone will comprehend their inane ramblings.

I am currently searching for a new job and will be departing this hellhole soon enough. I don't care if I end up homeless, I never want to work in this environment again! I have a tested I.Q of 135, have had outstanding recommendations on my work ethic from previous jobs, and do not need to work in a discriminatory environment. I will be warning every single individual I come into contact with about this company's shady practices and outmoded way of thinking. God help the poor souls who still perspire under the heel of this evil beast.

I am a Kmart employee. It is extremely funny when a customer decides to reach a manager, due to my or one of my co-workers "ignorance." (first and only complaint I've ever had of my 5 years of work) Yes, ignorance, for? For not knowing where an item was that I've never heard of, that was ultimately from a department that I've never worked. (some kind of stocking from the clothing department)
I agree with the above complaints, if you want us to bend over backwards for you, get over yourselves first.

I'm an employee at KMart. Ive wokred retail for over 18yrs. This past Christmas season was the worst over all due to customers. Everytime something did'nt go as they thought it should first one they blame is the Cashiers and the floor associates. Well shame on you. If your having a bad day don't take it out on us, we aret trying to do our job. We are not your door mat. We are told to leave our attitude at the door then so should you, the customer. I treat you the way you treat me if you don't like then don't do it. Basically you need to get over yourselves.
