Sallie Mae is not out to give a darn about a student/graduates problems. If a school (like the Art Institute Online) lied to you about job placement, tough luck. If you have had an emergency situation where you've lost loved ones, or were in the hospital yourself because of an accident.......... tough luck.

If you can't find work because George W. decided to play War with your tax dollars and brought the economy to sh*t, then tough luck. They don't care if you are making less than $600, or even $0, they want that money. They don't fault the schools, they fault the students who were deceived, they are a conglomerate partner with schools for the sake of getting your money and then some.

You think they want you to be able to pay off the loans at the lowest possible percentage? Of course not, and they don't want you to tell high school students that they are better off learning the cost effective and smart way by purchasing books, software, and learning from how to videos, etc. instead of going broke for an education that may be very bad and unaccredited. Spread the word to other people you care about so that they aren't pissed on.

I was able to speak to a representative in a timely fashion, however the woman I spoke to began raising her voice and speaking very condescendingly when I asked her a question about my total current balance. I was confused about how the daily interest works and instead of explaining it nicely she became agitated and annoyed. I did not feel satisfied when I ended the conversation and do not understand how someone could be so rude. I've dealt with other student loan companies who were more than willing to explain loan issues in layman's terms, but never from Sallie Mae. I'm very upset with the way I was spoken to and will never use them again.

Well like everyone else I tried to call and see if I could get help but got the dail tone. Anyway I was calling them because I have been diagnosed with cancer and it will eventually kill me the doc says maybe two years max. I tried to tell that to sallie Mae and the gentleman on the other end told me that its not his problem. The meds and every thing else are adding up I can't work anymore and I know I barrowed the money but they won't work out any type of plan with me so the will be taking my taxes witch I needed to help pay for meds so I can be with my four kids and wife as long as possible. Why can they get a hand out from us tax payers but they won't work out something with a dieing man same on you Sallie Mae. [email protected]

Horrible customer service, once i finally got help it was all for nothing the customer service rep if I could call her that blew off everything I said and told me to check online. When I told her that I needed to speak to someone she refused to help. My advice to others is to find another way for help this site is useless.

I've called several times just to get a promisorry note faxed to me. One time they told me it was sent and it wasn't another time when I was on the phone to go check if it was faxed they hung up. Never get a loan thru these guys. Sallie Mae is an absolute nightmare.

Been trying to get my payments lowered. They are absolutely unwilling to work with me. I've only talked to 1 somewhat pleasant person. She's apparently the only one in the entire company. I've been hung up on twice today. I even tried talking to a supervisor but she didn't have very many people skills and basically hung up on me too. Maybe if they would pull the stick out they would be easier to deal with. Definitely going to tell everyone I know how much they suck. They don't mind ringing your phone off the hook but they're quiet testy when you ring theirs off the hook.

Called SM because I'm a cosigner on a loan & I get a paper saying it's late. I wanted to clear it up. What a mistake!! Was hung up on 3 times, (1 of those times was by a rep.) Then when I tell them the confirmation # they still said the payment was not registering...huh? Isn't that the point to that? What a nightmare ! I will never get another loan through here & I'm telling everyone about it.

I could not get any information on my federal loans from their site or customer service. While I paid my private loans off completely, my federal loans went into default. I made all my rehab payments (including extra ones) on time, during which time they also garnished my check. Now they are out of default, my check still gets garnished even though all of my loans are in good standing, or completely paid off, and i get calls from them trying to collect payments on my private loans that are paid off. I am thinking of just buying some stock in the company instead of making my payments, there is no way they can lose money with this approach.

I have an issue with Sallie Mae as they ripped me off on the interest rate and fee's on my student loan, then turning the loan over as defaulted to collect insurance from the govenment. I did a loan consolidation at 3% interest with Sallie Mae in June of 2005. After I sent in the paper work, Sallie Mae dragged their feet on the consolidation (6 months). After dragging their feet for six months Sallie Mae then stated in a 3 different letters to me that Sallie Mae was having problem doing the consolidation due to "problem with reference" or "we are having issues with reference" or "lack of references", even though these references are the same references I used to get the student loans through the FAFSA site.

First, a letter sent to me from Sallie Mae stated that I had a lack of references; I could not understand this as I provided the two required references on the consolidation application like the application requested. Second, another letter I received from Sallie Mae stating we are having issues with your references, so I updated them online on Sallie Mae's website, I thought things were good, I was wrong. Latter on within a month after updating the references, Sallie Mae then called me on the phone, I again provided the name of my references with addresses to some foreign speaking person on the phone who stated she worked for Sallie Mae and who I could hardly understand as well as her understanding me. I then received a third letter a few days later that stated, "We tried to contact you by phone for updated references but were unable to reach you". WTF, I just provided this non-English speaking representative at Sallie Mae with all the reference information, what gives. I thought this was some kind of mistake, since it came a couple days after the phone call, so I ignored it. I heard nothing more after this from Sallie Mae.

Any how, after 180 days of being out of school the loan repayment begins. Well, I found out on the first payment that the interest rate was at 7.14% not at 3%. I contacted Sallie Mae over and over without any success of getting this issue taken care of. I then threaten Sallie Mae that I would withhold payment if this was not taken care of right away and that I was entitled to do this under federal law (Fair Credit Reporting Act). Sallie Mae wrote back promising to correct the issue. Next month nothing happened, so I withheld payment, contacted Sallie Mae again, and offered to pay what I actually owed. Sallie Mae refused to accept the money I actually owed. After this the problems started, I had to sent certified letters and e-mails (near a 100 e-mails) to Sallie Mae, this went on back and forth on the consolidation issue and Sallie Mae did not want to talk about it anymore, other than to say Sallie Mae did nothing wrong. I was getting nowhere with these idiots. Then after a few months of back and forth e-mails, Sallie Mae took the position that I had defaulted on the loan and sent the collection agencies after me.

Eventually, after a year and half of fighting back and forth with Sallie Mae and the many collection agencies, Sallie Mae turned the account over to NSLP as a defaulted loan. Sallie Mae never disclosed to any of the collection agencies or National Student Loan Program that I was disputing this loan, because of the interest rate. Sallie Mae told National Student Loan Program and/or Nebraska Student Loan Program that it was an uncollectable debt and I had defaulted on the loan, in order so Sallie Mae could collect through a government insurance claim the overcharged interest rate and the other fee's that Sallie Mae added on to the loan. I looked this up in under federal law and it seems that Sallie Mae violated the Federal Civil False Claims Act, 31 U.S.C § 3729(a)(1) and § 3729(a)(2) by reporting this loan as being defaulted when in fact I had a legal right to dispute this loan under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

I let NSLP know what was going on by sending them a certified letter outlining what had happen with copies of the documentation and then I let the Department of Education know this as well. Both stated that they would review the case. The Department of Education dragged their feet way past the time limit that is establish by law to answer my complaint, only after I complained about DOE missing the deadline to respond, did they answer my complaint unfavorably. NSLP stated they would review the complaint, but never followed up at all, I still am waiting on the loan review as NSLP promised me in 2008 and 2010. In 2009, NSLP did a treasury off on my income taxes for $1500.00+ and then told the credit bureaus that I owed $80,000.00 when in fact my loans where less than $14,000 to begin with. I have asked the credit bureaus to remove this information or to provide proof of validated debt; I then provided proof of what I owed to the three credit bureaus. Two of the credit bureaus remove the extra money above the $14,000, but Experian did not remove it and has refused to remove it. This ended up causing me problems with my job as I need to hold a security clearance to keep my job. The security clearance people seen this in my credit file and it has held up my clearance (not denying it or approving it). Well of course my employer, hire someone else, and gave me until this October of 2012 to resolve it or be totally laid off.

So, I contacted Senator Patty Murray, Congressman Adam Smith, and Attorney General McKenna's office to get them involved and help resolve this issue. Both legislators and Attorney General wrote letters to Salle Mae and Sallie Mae denied any wrong doing. I then provided written copies of the correspondences between Sallie Mae and me, showing that Sallie Mae had offered to correct the issue. Neither legislator has done a follow up and has done little to nothing to help out so far. Attorney General McKenna did the most foot work, but stated that their hands are tied and I would need to file a lawsuit.

As of today, nothing has been done about Sallie Mae or the (NSLP) National Student Loan Program by congress even after all the problems other students like myself are having with Sallie Mae and NSLP. Both, Sallie Mae and National Student Loan Program are free to screw your credit up and obviously they do not have to follow federal laws either. Sallie Mae and National Student Loan Program are free to put anything they want on your credit record and credit bureau Experian does not even verify anything that these two criminal companies report, even if you provide the documentation that proves different, "like the proof I submitted to Experian that was completely ignored." I have been forced to look for attorney and I want to file a lawsuit for damages as both Sallie Mae and NSLP are denying they have done anything wrong.

Right now I'm faced with losing my job here very soon as I have been having issues getting a security clearance, because of the fraud and false credit reporting being committed by Sallie Mae and National Student Loan Program (NSLP). Sallie Mae currently has a class action lawsuits pending against them in the 9th district Federal court for phone harassment and robo calls. Other lawsuits are also pending, as well as an investigation.

I do feel for all of you out there who are dealing with Sallie Mae and/or (NSLP) National Student Loan Program. My advice for others facing similar issues is to get yourself an attorney before it's too late and it causes other problems like loss of your job, loss of your income tax return check, overcharging of fee's, or garnishment of wages. As for anyone considering going to school and getting a loan, my advice is don't deal with Sallie Mae or NSLP, otherwise you will be sorry. You have been warned!

No you will like this one. After my sister had pass away I find out that she and her son put my name on the loan as co-signer and sents she has pass her son has not made any payment. For this I'm dealing with trying to get my name taking off and these asses will not take me off even after i contract the fraud department and filled out all the paper work they wanted they still will not remove my name. and after all this i have collection agency calling and sending me letter telling me i own this amount so everytime i make copies of the signatures on the loans and copy of my driver lis and sent it to these collections and tell them sorry but i did not sign and i'm not paying for this.
so my message to anyone that reads this if you see anything saying you are a co-signer of anything contract that company and get a copy of the loan.

Impossible to deal with! The worst! All customer service is outside of the US and their people are not trained to deal with problems. That this is based offshore is enough of an insult to our battered economy and unemployed. That they are incompetent and can't get their records straight adds to the insult. The one thing they excel at is keeping track of your debt. They can ruin your credit rating and your life.

Take it from one unemployed college grad...the cost of a degree and is not worth putting yourself in debt for life to deal with this corrupt system.

First off, I would have never been going through this nightmare if I would've never made the TERRIBLE decision to attend the University of Phoenix-BIG MISTAKE-they'll rip you off too, but that's another comment board.

When the loans got transferred over to Sallie Mae from Direct Loan I let Sallie Mae know that I wouldn't be able to keep up with the high monthly rate so I asked to be on a payment plan, and about 60 days or so later they sent me a letter telling me I only had to pay $64.91 as my monthly fee with one low interest rate.I'm the type of person that likes to pay off loans fast because I don't like paying alot of interest, so I tend to make one payment every Friday(if able to of course).Everything was going smoothly(the smoothness only lasted for a short period of time I might add) and only about $4-5 would accrue every week which is reasonable. Well one day I decided to log onto my account and I see that I have accrued a MASSIVE $57 over the course of like 5 or 6 days!!! That is out of this world! An interest rate would have to be extremely high in order for you to accrue that much money in that short period of time. I just made a payment on Friday,July 6 for $65.53 in order to cover the massive $60 that had already accrued on my account. I made another $60 payment today because $49.44 has already accrued since Friday and today is only Tuesday!!!! That's four days!!! THAT IS INSANE!!! It's got to be illegal. I'd literally have to pay sallie mae everyday just to make any ground on the principal balance of my loan. How are people supposed to pay other bills and survive when we have to dish out our whole livelihood to these crooks! Sallie mae could care less though!

With my payment plan I'm SUPPOSED to be on one low interest rate, but I've done the math and I've figured out their game. Sallie has added the interest rates on all four of my loans which totals at 24.8% and that's the rate their charging me. Everytime I call them they tell me that I'm wrong and their not charging me the way I think they are and there's nothing that anybody can do.What makes me even angrier is that they claim that only $3 accrues on my account each day! ARE YOU SERIOUS!! I go on the website like every couple of days and it's an outrageous interest fee built up!!

Explain to me how you can be on a payment plan for $64 a month and be required to pay over $100 in interest to sallie mae, when we had an aggreement that I would have one low interest rate NOT a COMBINED TOTAL of all of my interest rates! At this rate the loan would never get paid off and I would be forever indebted to sallie mae. This is what they want though, they want people to keep paying them unfair interest rates in order to line their pockets.Another thing is they lied to me for the longest time and told me that there was no way that I could consolidate my loans and all of sudden miraculously last week I'm able to consolidate my loans if I'd like. The customer service reps I had didn't even try to sympathize with my situation.DO NOT EVER DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY IF YOU DON'T HAVE TO.MY LOAN WAS TRANSFERRED HERE SO I DIDN'T HAVE A CHOICE.THEY ONLY WANT YOUR MONEY.THEY'LL DO NOTHING BUT BRING STRESS INTO YOUR LIFE!!

First, I was never told that Sallie Mae bought my loans until they were already late. I was never late on my Great Lakes loan, in fact, I had paid it ahead in hopes of paying it off early. Then I lost my job and the pay ahead became a cushion. Fast forward, Sallie Mae buys my loan and the only way I find out is a letter from Great Lakes thanking me for using their services. I already owed late fees to Sallie Mae at that point.

May 2011 and June 2011 I make payments totaling 200.00. Then the harassing phone calls start. People call at all hours, telling me I am delinquent. I ask how is that possible, I made these two payments - they claim they don't have them and demand payment right then and there. I tell them that I need to look into this before I just turn over more money. I contact my bank and they can verify that in fact the 200 was received electronically by Sallie Mae and they would be happy to talk to Sallie Mae for me. I call Sallie Mae back and explain that my bank would like to speak with them. The rep says it's against policy for them to speak to 3rd parties without my consent - I'm consenting right now...watch we'll dial them in with me on the phone. She says that's not the correct consent, they need it in writing. So I ask her to send it to me. That never came. I ask what they need to prove that the money did come out of my bank account and into their possession. They need the EFT (electronic file transfer) slip. Well, that has to come from my bank, whom they refuse to communicate with. Stellar. Since I have attempted to get this corrected numerous times. Every single time, I am told that they found the mistake and I should see the money credited anywhere from 24-48 hours to 2-4 weeks. Guess what is never credited. Seriously Sallie Mae, this is STEALING. I have more than enough proof that the money made it into your hands. They went so far as to write my grandmother (cosigner) and tell her that they hadn't heard from me for months and could she update my information for them - my grandma sent me the letter in the mail and I opened it AS I WAS ON THE PHONE WITH THEM! They will do nothing short of lying, cheating and stealing to get more money.

The most recent, the payments I make do not seem to be adding up. I asked for documentation showing a declining balance and was told it's against policy??! How is that not illegal? When I responded with "How is that possible, a credit card company would have to provide me a document showing a declining balance?" The response was simply "Our leaders believe this is the way we should be run." Oh ok, so let me talk to a manager. A very surly man gets on the phone and explains that I can see my payment history as well as a current balance online. I know that, I'm looking at it, however, I want documentation of a declining balance from you. He agreed to send me something but who knows if it will be what I actually want to see.

These people need to be prosecuted, as they lie and cheat hard working people out of hard earned money and send it overseas through outsourcing...

Posted by Anonymous

They lie, steal and cheat. We have never gotten any documentation, even though we have asked many, many times; they tell us the will send it, but no they don't. They tell us that we are approved for a payment plan, then they stop taking prearranged payments, we call and they tell us we are delinguent and did not qualify for the payment plan, even though they took 12 months of payments on the plan. They tell us that they are paying principle and interest, yet they only take interest and tack on any unpaid principle to be amortized again and again. So a loan of 30,000 is now work 63,000 and if paid every month for 105 years we can only pay off what we owe today. So by the time we die we will owe them 500,000. What to do??? Contacted senators, congressman, signed petition for H.R.4170. Sallie Mae has no regulations or laws governing them. They are accountable to no one. What applies to every, and I mean every other loan does not apply to them. Their customer service reps don't know anything and we are always dealing with someone new, who again knows nothing. So far they are not rude, but very incompetent, or they are just telling you one thing while Sallie Mae does another. So they lie.

Since Sallie Mae has taken over my citibank student loans, communicating with someone to talk about my loan balances has been nothing but torture.

I do not mean to sound like I am discriminating, but each customer service rep I reach is obviously not from America and are all Indians with a heavy accent. They do not understand anything that I ask of them but rather read a script and if I ask again or ask them to explain what I read myself but need clarification, they continue to read a script like robots with heavy accents. They do not know how to answer a simple question.

Just recently I asked about deferment extension for someone who was on leave from school and now returning thus their graduation date extending. Granted the original deferment was done automatically, meaning, I never completed any documents. However when I asked how to complete this, they read me a script more than 5 times and then placed me on hold because I asked them if my school needed to complete anything. They kept saying to just fill out a verification form myself. But again I said to them, should not my school complete something at their end because I could make this whole thing up about my graduation date changing, shouldn't I submit some kind of documents from school...should I have financial aid handle something...is my medical leave paper work sufficient. Their response...just fill out the verification form yourself. Back and forth and finally the unintelligent person decides to place me on hold again...finally reading another script that reads that the school needs to verify my new status through financial aid or the registrar's office with a copy of the leave form, etc. So I said...this was all I have been asking for the last 15 minutes...I do not understand why we went through all of this...and in her strong accent she just says...mam I'm sorry for this particular information...and then began to read her script again!!!!!!!

There are so many Americans who need jobs..why are we outsourcing jobs to Indians so they can handle the money information of Americans...when there are a lot of capable Americans available to do the job...do it with knowledge...professionalism...and able to enunciate their words.

I plan to pay this loan off completely in the next 4 months so I can be done with this terrible customer service and dealing with people who do not even bother to learn the ropes of the job they have acquired. If I had to read a script every damn day for my job...I'd be fired in a heart beat for not learning about my position.

Want to borrow money...borrow from small business banks handled by your neighbors. The big banks will just sell you out to some company like Sallie Mae who wants to save money by passing the jobs off to non-Americans who cannot and care not to learn their job post....a way for greedy Sallie Mae to keep and make more money....disgusting!

Posted by lsmith3412

Sallie Mae has essentially stolen my money. I sent a payment, clearly deducted from my checking account, and when I provided my checking statement they still said they have no record. They are thieves!!!!!

It's not even worth going to college if you have to go through Sallie Mae. They are awful. They will lie constantly and tell you they will send you written documentation and will never do it. They make no effort whatsoever to be clear about loan terms on their website. MOST OF ALL...Borrower beware..They will apply your payments to future payments instead of the principle, costing you way more money. You have to specify that it goes to principal (DUH.) and even then they still screw up. They are terrible. By far the worst.

These guys need to be prosecuted by the Government. We have paid our loan every month for 10 years. We switched banks and cancelled all payments through our old bank. After confirming cancellation with Sallie Mae several times, they continued to try to put payment through our old bank. Since the account was closed we kept getting hit fee's. When we set up payment through our new bank, they gladly took our payment but haven't credited our account. We shockingly got a letter saying we were 60 days past dude and our credit was being effected. Despite them having 400 dollars of our money. They said the only way to fix the situation would be to MAIL them a copy of our bank statement to prove the payment. They have no email address?? It's like its 1965. They are ripping us off by holding money and not crediting our account. Meanwhile the credit downgrade is preventing us from buying a house. Apparently, if you use your bank, you have to put a 102 at the end of your account number to have it hit your account. If you don't they just keep it and say you haven't paid. UNREAL!!!

I contacted Sallie Mae because I was behind in payments. I was set up on a payment plan to bring me current and was advised that I would only be charged a specific amount each month and was mailed a payment schedule. After three months of paying the set amount outlined on the payment schedule the price jumped and my account was overdrawn. When I had called the first rep advised that this was not right and he will figure it out and call me back. No one called so I called back, spoke with someone who could not deviate from a script and refused to transfer me to a manager. I hung up and call back and was advised that there was a processing fee...how can there all of a sudden be a processing fee? She said I agreed to it but I never received said documentation, and informed the papers I received for the plan I set up does not indicate anywhere a processing fee. and why after 3 months was it suddenly added? It still doesnt make sense but I was pretty much told to deal with it. Most of the people I speak with are very pleasent but these past two were very rude which made this experience even more annoying. If it would have been indicated from the get go that I was going to also be charged a processing fee on top of my payment and CHARGED from the 1st payment I would have been okay with it.

My ratings are for the last 2 calls that I had trying to resolve this issue, not my overall experience.

I paid off my son's Sallie Mae account of almost 6,000.00 dollars. The check cleared 22 May 2012. To date Sallie Mae will not admit it has the money, only demands that I keep paying the paid off loan, even though the check cleared my account, I have a payment number FROM Sallie Mae - it is now up to me to go to court because they are so crooked they cannot even find the money they took from my checking account. This is totally insane - everyone working there is inept, stupid or just totally crooked.

This company use to be good in the 90's before they started to outsource their customer service department to India and the Philippines. Very rarely do you get the customer reps in the USA that know what they are doing.

Here's some advice for Sallie Mae, by outsourcing your killing the US economy and increasing ID theft by giving US citizen information to foreigners. Get ready for a big lawsuit in the future.

When I became unemployed and could no longer keep up with the payments on my loan they recommended that I apply for a deferment. I went on their website to retrieve their forms and no link would let me in to get the forms. My cursor would change the color of the link, but the link would not load. I would go to the drop down menu to change payment and when I would try to scroll down the drop down menu would disappear not allowing me to choose it. After hours of searching for a way to get the form I found one on a different site and uploaded it to their website. By that time I was exhausted with anger. (I am a computer Engineer and am very familiar with a computer, I know I wasn't doing anything incorrectly to get this form) I called them a little later to discuss the deferment and when I finished I asked the customer service about this error. She starting reciting the method in which to retrieve the document and said it was working correctly and I replied I did all of that and it still would not allow me to get the document. She said that she had just walked someone through it and it worked fine, so I had her walk me through it. While going through all of the same motions that I went through for hours...wow it worked. I made a comment that included an insinuation that they were causing this to happen if suddenly stopped working again. I don't know why they would do this, unless it was to cause a person to spend another long exhausting call with them or for some other reason like entrapment into hearing more illegal rules regarding ways for them to accumulate interest unlawfullu, but it angered me more. Here I am laid off of work again, struggling with money and they want customers to pay for the fact that they may have to lay off employees in the future because of Obama's new laws. Why is it my fault. I am already suffering my lay off and struggling, what makes them better than me. I went to college to pay my future bills, not have a company make me a part of their revenge for something they couldn't change.

UNethical buyout of low interest loans. Manipulation of interest rates and calculation. Not posting payments that have come out of my account. Excessive interest rates. Unwillingness to work with borrower. Thats just for starters. You are the next too big to fail Sallie Mae I hope you suffer a fate worse than the banks and insurance companies.
